Google Business Profile Setup: The Complete Checklist

A practical, do-it-in-an-afternoon checklist to set up your Google Business Profile properly — from claiming and verifying to building a review engine that compounds.

Your Google Business Profile is often the first — and sometimes the only — impression a potential customer gets before deciding whether to call, visit, or scroll on. A complete, accurate, well-maintained profile earns that click. A half-finished one quietly sends people to a competitor.

This is a practical, do-it-in-an-afternoon checklist to set your profile up properly, from claiming it to keeping it healthy. Work through it top to bottom.

Step 1: Claim and verify your profile

Nothing else works until you own the listing.

  • Search your business name on Google. If a profile already exists, choose "Claim this business"; if not, create one at the Google Business Profile site.
  • Complete verification (usually by phone, email, or postcard). Until you're verified, you can't respond to reviews or edit key details.
  • If someone else has claimed your business, request access through Google's process rather than creating a duplicate.
Common mistake: Creating a second profile because you can't access the first. Duplicate listings split your reviews and confuse Google. Always reclaim the existing one.

Step 2: Complete every core detail (your NAP and more)

Consistency and completeness are what Google rewards and customers trust. Fill in everything:

  • Name — your real business name, exactly as it appears elsewhere (no keyword stuffing like "Best Plumber KL").
  • Address — precise, and formatted identically to your website and other listings.
  • Phone — a consistent local number.
  • Hours — accurate, including special hours for holidays.
  • Website and category — pick the most accurate primary category, then add relevant secondary ones.

Your name, address, and phone (your "NAP") must match across your website, social profiles, and directories. Inconsistent NAP is one of the most common — and most fixable — local-SEO weaknesses.

Step 3: Make it visual and specific

Profiles with real, current photos get more engagement than bare ones.

  • Add a recognisable logo and a strong cover photo.
  • Upload real photos of your space, team, and products — not stock imagery.
  • Fill in the "from the business" description with a clear, honest summary of what you do and who you serve.
  • Add products and services, and use attributes (e.g. wheelchair accessible, outdoor seating) where they apply.

Refresh your photos periodically — a listing that hasn't changed in two years looks abandoned.

Step 4: Turn on the features customers use

Your profile is interactive. Switch on what fits your business:

  • Messaging, if you can respond promptly.
  • Booking or appointment links, if relevant.
  • Q&A — seed a few genuine common questions and answer them yourself.
  • Google Posts — share real updates, offers, or news to keep the profile active.

Step 5: Set up your review engine

Reviews are the heart of the profile — and the part most owners under-manage. Two things matter: getting them, and responding to them.

Once your profile is set up, connecting it to Zorexa means every new review gets a personalised, on-brand response without you living in the dashboard.

Step 6: Keep it healthy

Setup is a one-time job; maintenance is what compounds.

  • Re-check hours, contact details, and photos every quarter.
  • Reply to new reviews within a day or two.
  • Watch for unauthorised edits to your listing (Google sometimes accepts user-suggested changes) and correct them.
  • Keep your NAP consistent everywhere as your business grows.

Perkara utama

  • Claim and verify first — you can't manage reviews or edit details until you do
  • Complete every field and keep your name, address, and phone identical everywhere
  • Use real, current photos and switch on the interactive features that fit your business
  • The review engine — asking and replying consistently — is what separates a live profile from a dormant one

A great Google Business Profile isn't complicated — it's just complete, accurate, and actively maintained. Work through this checklist once to get the foundation right, then keep the review engine running: ask consistently, reply to everyone, and let automation hold the standard as you grow. That's the difference between a listing that exists and one that brings customers through the door.
